The 20 Most Popular Bike Brands Sold in the US

!±8± The 20 Most Popular Bike Brands Sold in the US

Well, this is certainly a controversial, complicated and constantly evolving topic. There are so many bicycle manufacturers, bicycle types and popular brand names sold in the US, that it can be difficult to find a comprehensive summary and to sort it all out.

The top 20 most popular bike brand listing that I've compiled here is not based on the number of bikes sold alone or on the quality or perceived quality of the bicycles. Most of the bike manufacturers listed here also sell different bike types (road, mountain, hybrid, etc.) and the list below is not broken down by bike type or category.

This listing is intended to be a guide as to what bike brands are currently the most popular in the USA, at the time of this writing (since bike brands come and go and the sales of various bike types rise and fall).

The Top 20 Most Popular Bike Brands and the bike types that they sell

Trek - Road, Triathlon , Mountain Hardtail , Mountain Full-Suspension , Urban , Bike Path, Cruiser , Women's , Kids Schwinn - Road, Commuter, Comfort, Cruisers, Electric, Mountain Bikes, BMX, Kids Giant - Road, Mountain, Giant for Women, Lifestyle, Hybrid (HCT), BMX, Kids Cannondale - Road, Mountain, Women's Recreation (many sub categories) Mongoose - BMX Bikes (Team Bikes, Freestyle Bikes, Dirt Street Bikes) Mountain / Pavement (Dual Suspension, Jumping, Hardtail XC, Comfort, Commuter, Road Alternative,  Raleigh - Road, Performance Hybrid, Hybrid, Comfort, Mountain, Cruiser, Women, Youth Specialized Road, Multi Street, Globe (commute, comfort), Dirt/Street/Vert (BMX), Kids ATB Diamondback - MTN Full Suspension , Mountain Hardtail , Devine Designs , Comfort ,Cruiser , Performance Hybrid , Hybrid , Youth , BMX Fuji - Road, Mountain, Specialty, Women's, Lifestyle, Kids Haro -All Mountain-Freeride, Dirt Jump/ Urban, XC Trail / XC Sport, 650B, 29er, Metro, Comfort, Cruiser Shimano - Road, Mountain, Comfort, BMX Huffy - since 1892 - Mountain, BMX, Kids, Road Gary Fisher - 29ers, Full Suspension,  Genesisters, Hardtails, Kids, Pavement, Road Ellsworth - High end Mountain Bikes Klein - High end Mountain and Road Bikes Jamis - High end Full Suspension, Hardtail, Road, Street, Sport Comfort, Youth Bianchi - Hors Categorie (HOC), Born for Performance (B4P), Coast to Coast (C2C), Dama Bianca, D2, Special, Classica, Road Steel, MTB Performance, MTB Leisure, Sport, Cross-Terrain GT - Mountain, BMX, Road, Womens Rocky Mountain - Mountain, Road, Urban & Path, Ladies Only Scott - Mountain, Road, Women's Junior's

Some of the popular bike brands listed here can only be purchased at specialty bike shops or independent dealers. Although this marketing technique makes these brands harder to find, in some cases this it improves the perceived quality of the bikes over brands that are distributed to the mass market or that can be easily found at sporting goods stores or even online.

I have included the bike types or bike categories that each manufacturer sells under the brand names listed. The bike type descriptions were, in most cases, taken directly from each bike manufacturers website in order to not only let you know what kind of bikes they make but also how the company perceives the bike types that they make and how they market them to you.

Presenting a Patent for Sale to a Company

!±8± Presenting a Patent for Sale to a Company

Typically, these companies also claim that they can patent your idea, which is impossible. (Any competent patent attorney will tell you that only an invention can be patented, not a mere idea.) However, even the sharpest inventors tend to be drawn in by these seductive promises. While it might seem logical to attribute this to laziness, that does not seem to be the case. Inventing is tough, diligent work. The more likely explanation is that inventors are not familiar with the business side of patents and these companies seem like a smart way to go.

In fact, inventors with patent ideas can bypass this chump's game and do most (if not all) of their patent sale presentations themselves. All you need is some knowledge about how companies evaluate patents and how to emphasize the benefits of yours. With that in hand, you will be primed and ready to go out and sell your patent to a buyer.

First, you need to decide how you want to sell your patent. Your two choices are to license your patent or to assign it. Essentially, licensing your patent lets you retain the underlying rights but grant someone else -- the licensee -- the right to make something based on the patent. In exchange, you get royalties and whatever performance obligations you write into the license agreement. Assigning a patent, on the other hand, is an outright transfer to someone else, after which that person is the sole, exclusive owner of the patent. (Read our in-depth article on patent licensing for more information on both options.)

Once you have decided whether to sell your patent via licensing or assignment, the next step is to determine which company you should be making your pitch to. For example, the inventor of a new, lighter and more durable bicycle tire might assume that he needs to talk to Wal-Mart or the Sports Authority. In reality, he wants to speak with companies like Huffy or Schwinn, ie, companies who make and manufacture bicycles. They are who would be most likely to buy your patent, since it coincides with their existing line of business. It's what those in the business call a "natural fit."

He might even want to go further down the chain and approach the company who creates bicycle tires, if this is a different company. The closer you can get to the physical implementation of your idea, the more likely it is that your presentation will be favorably received.

The reason for this is simple. The higher up you go, the more layers your idea will have to pass through until it reaches the people whose lives will be concretely affected by it. Not only that, but other people will not present your idea with the energy and enthusiasm that you will. The importance of narrowing down the list of companies to make your sales pitch to in this way cannot be stressed enough.

Once you identify the company you need to speak to, you need to work on what you will say to them. To keep our example of a new kind of bike tire; you want to emphasize to the tire manufacturer why your design of tire is superior. Beyond that, you want to demonstrate why the company needs to use your design. For instance, you might want to include in your presentation a survey where 75% of respondents said that shoddy bike tires are the reason they do not buy new bicycles. The idea is to focus on benefits to the company, rather than hype and self-promotion. This is what will make them eager to buy your patent and put it to use in their products.

Once you have prepared a clear, benefit-driven presentation, the final step is to make the pitch. Generally, you will find a business development mailing address or e-mail address on the company website. Just send them a short, to the point note saying that you have a business proposal you would like to discuss. Make sure you include enough details to get their attention, but not so much that your note becomes a novel.

Above all, maintain confidence in yourself and your patent. If you have carefully though things through, you can indeed sell your patent on terms that are favorable to you and your future prospects.

Here is a Quick Method to Get Your Power Source off Dead Center, A Pro Move You Can Do!

!±8± Here is a Quick Method to Get Your Power Source off Dead Center, A Pro Move You Can Do!

Power Source. A key factor in the making of a player. I'm not talking about breaking 100 here. That is not even in our sights. I'm talking about breaking 80 and beyond. Now don't get all huffy and start running to the refrig. for a beer.

Even though you may think it is absolutely nutty to think that you could shoot in the 70's, I believe that if you did one or two things in your swing consistently, you could get there. Wild and wooly thoughts? No not really.

What do you think would happen if you were able to hit your drives reasonable straight and reasonable long most of the time? Would you save a few shots a round?

What if you were able to hit your approach shots closer to the green, or better yet closer to the pin?

If you hit your driver longer you would have shorter approach shots. These shots are easier than hitting a 3 iron into a flat green. Right? Save a shot of two there also.

What if you were able to tap into your power source and harness the talent that has been hiding for so long? Wouldn't that be great. You would certainly be an example of how it can be done.

You must know that the power source comes from several places during your golf swing. But one of the most powerful thoughts that you can have is " control" this means that it is far better to hit the ball with the middle of the clubface with less clubhead speed than it is to hit it off center with more clubhead speed.

So start there. Gear down enough to make sure you can hit the ball with the middle of the clubface. Whatever it takes to do that.. do it. Only then can you capture what follows. For it is truly within the power source to have control. No control.. no power.

What follows is a no nonsense, straight to the point lesson on how to develop your power source. If you elect to ignore the basics here you will continue to be confused and in correction during your golf swing and advancement will elude you.

So here we go.

I have said many times that ALL good players have great angles. There is no getting around this. No angles, no power.

Creating these angles is relatively simple. The hard part is keeping them through the impact position or at least so near impact that it's hard to tell the difference.

Here, I make a great leap of faith in hoping that readers have a clue as to grip and setup. I am not going to get into these basics with you. Just know this, never has there been a good player with a bad grip. You know what a good grip is. Just do it. Even if it feels like crap. Do it.

And you know that your setup is key. Keep you back fairly straight and once you create this spine angle it must be maintained throughout your swing. No exceptions.

This is very very important. It's one of the angles. Maintain your set up spine angle through out the swing.

Another angle is the angle between the back of the right hand and the right forearm. At the top of the swing this is often referred to as the "trayed position" this is a key angle. If you bend your right hand back toward your forearm you will see this angle.

The other angle is the one between the left arm and the clubshaft. This one will happen if you have bent your right hand back toward your right forearm. This angle is also key, it is the one that great players maintain for so long into the impact position to create tremendous power. It is the same one that helps create "lag"

The last angle is no angle at all. It is a flat position of the left hand at the top of your backswing. This is the opposite of a "cupped left hand"

You should note the position of Tiger Woods left hand at the top of his swing. It is flat, not cupped. There are a few good players that work with a cupped left hand at the top, but not many. It is a position that will require correction somewhere during the downswing to square up the clubface.

That is not something you do not want to do. So flat left hand. Just like Tiger, is there a better model?

You can create these angles by pushing your right hand bent slightly while at the setup position. Then just turn your center ( chest) to start the backswing.

But this is where most of the trouble starts. That cussed downswing. The problem is that most players allow the clubhead to out race the hands in their effort to create power and hit the ball.

This is exactly the opposite of what should happen. At the worst case, your hands and the clubhead should arrive at impact at the same time. But that is not ideal. Ideal is hands first. Clubhead last.

You are in a race.

The participants are the clubhead and you hands.

The finish line is the ball.

Your hands must win this race if you are to use your power source. Angles.

Now here is what happens. As you attempt to hit the ball with speed, you are transferring speed from your hands to the clubhead. As soon as the clubhead is moving faster than your hands, it will win the race. As it passes your hands it is instantly slowing down when what you want is constant acceleration.

Your hands must get there first. If you have ever taken an apple and stuck it on the end of a stick to throw the apple, you know exactly what is happening if your cluhead wins the race.

You see the clubhead is the apple. In the apple on the stick example, you throw the apple by whipping the stick and suddenly stopping your forward motion with your hands. All the energy gets transferred to the end of the stick where the apple happens to be. Off goes the apple, well ahead of your hands.

In this case the apple wins the race. In the case of the clubhead, it is exactly the same thing. If you slow down your hands the energy will transfer to the clubhead and race ahead of your hands assuring you of reduced power because your angle is gone as the clubhead wins this race to the ball.

This is a major power drain as the angles that are your source of energy transfer, are now expended. This energy is used up by the clubhead as it races past your hands. The angles are used to create leverage. As you use up the leverage in this energy transfer cycle, you have lost your power source as well.

It is the same as the apple. You can hit the ball this way, no doubt. It is just not efficient or powerful. The sad part of this is that at some point in your swing, the power was available to you. Then, because you are not aware of how to use it, you attempt to create a different power source with the clubhead and all is lost.

If you did this in slow motion, you would be able to see why the clubhead winning this race is a power drain. The position of the clubhead is now moving up, not down as it should be. The release, if there is one, has already happened before impact.

The angle between your left arm and the clubs shaft is gone and the clubhead is slowing down. Also the angle between the back of the right hand and it's forearm is also gone. What ever angles you created during the setup and back swing are totally gone before there is impact. The clubhead wins and you lose.

And even less obvious is that your spine angle has changed to accommodate the motions of this early release of angles, a move required in order to get the clubhead into the back of the ball at all.

The solution is simple. Make your hands go faster than the clubhead and keep them on path and plane.

Here is a little drill.

Take no more than a 7 iron. Setup and with a smaller than normal backswing. Hit balls making absolutely sure of two things. Your hands get to the ball first. And they never slow down. You can add a dimension here too that would help. Hit down on the ball with your hands.

You will hit the ball like magic if you can figure out in your mind that you need to create angles and keep them through impact making sure you hands win the race every single time.

Sketches From the Book - "Romances of a Midwinter Soldier"

Augsburg. Germany

1) Love in the Backseat
(Chris Steward's Sandwiches) (9-1970)
At the 1/36th Artillery

Boot camp was boot camp, and I was for the most part, a midwinter soldier, in that I was, or it was midwinter when I ended up in book camp and that is in itself another story, under the heading of the Novelette, "A Midwinter Soldier."

While in boot camp, we marched in the rain, and in the light snows of North Carolina, Fort Bragg, it was the winter of 1969 when it was all completed, and I'd head on to Alabama for my advance training. I had met a girl at the EM-Club, on the base at Fort Bragg, a German girl, but everyone was after her, and I was drinking in a location new recruits were not suppose to drink, so I said my hellos as much as I could when I drank at the club, got my eyes full of her, and kept my distance, I preferred to drink, than to have a short relationship with her, and had I fooled around with her, I'm sure the other crowed-those soldiers who were stationed at Fort Bragg on a permanent bases, the ones that stood sullenly around her hoping to amuse her enough to take her to bed, would inform the captain of my company that I was not allowed there, and thus, cause me trouble, and at the same time reduce the completion.

At the end of book camp, we had a beer bash, at Fort Bragg, and a lot of memories to bring home, the trials and tribulations of the Mess Hall, and peeling those potatoes on KP, and running around that three-mile field, like horses, with rubber hoofs, and the fighting Irish in me with my fellow soldiers, and my confrontation with the Captain of our company over my attitude and behavior, my drinking and madness, my low opinion of the drill sergeants. And on and on (another story in itself): but I made it anyhow, which I was doubtful a few times if I would. Not because I felt the Army was too rough, or too disciplined, or two physical, but it was simply just too disrespectful, and I had a hard time adjusting to that and nothing else, and I rebelled, and somewhere along the line, came to an understanding, I'd have to be jammed solid in the Army, and march halfway with it, or run to Canada, like a lost camel, and sleep on someone else couch I suppose, hiding, and looking in mirrors, so I changed my reasoning and perhaps the Captain gave me a better understanding on the matter, and yes I became in time a good soldier, or if not good a well balanced, holding no grudges soldier.

In Advance Training, at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, by Huntsville, I had met two girls there also, but again, the training took too many hours away from my daily thirst for girls, you couldn't really have both: good training and an Alabama relationship. And I didn't want to look for hookers.
But the two girls, me and my friend, an Indian, who would reunite with me in Vietnam, walked through the park with the girls, had some chants, and that was that; and onto my next duty station I went, in six weeks.

Augsburg, Germany, the 1/36 Artillery; this would be my home base for ten-months. And I was fascinated with it, with Germany per se, its culture, traditions, foods, likes and dislikes, its history, its maps, and of course its beer, which was stronger than the American caned beer.

Chris Steward, a German-Jew, started coming over to see me on guard duty often, I had met her in a dance hall, and she had called me over to her side one evening, about two months after I arrived in Augsburg, she was quite wealthy, and a manager of a Pizzeria. Had a new sports car, and took a liking to me. She was conceivably a few inches shorter than I, but not more than that, thin, and simply cups for breasts, but a pretty German girl-all in all, and intelligent in many ways. And she was like that Sharon girl, in that she loved sex, and when we had it, she came through, or we came through, like two logs grinding against one another. She was as hardy with her business lifestyle as well.

I don't want to cut down any old lovers, but the Shadow, a woman I dated prior to Chris, was in comparison, quite clumsy, crude and elemental, in that area.

With Chris, I always assumed this is what was happening: business, sex and buried in the sand with her daughter, Carmen. She was strict with her ten year old, and took no liking for me to give advice in her rearing methods, which could be harsh at times.

I had told her once during a bowling session, with her and her daughter, told her not to slap her in the face, when I was around,

"Don't talk that way to me," she inquisitively and angrily replied, "Carmen did wrong (and she did)..." she had told her daughter to go wash it off, the ice-cream, she had spilt on her hands, I had bought her some without Chris' permission, and Carmen was not suppose to accept the gift, which I didn't know. The child was not happy, and got a little moody with her, and Chris's response was (just before the slap) "Don't get huffy with me, Carmon, just because Dennis is here, it doesn't mean the rules are different (then 'slap...!')"

But that was just one occasion; she was all right normally, because a few minutes later she asked,

"Was anything the matter?" looking at me, and I said-looking at her and over to her daughter, and back to her, "No," I said, trying not to remember the argument, and slap, and her temper, which was for the most part, not, more often than not, out of control.

Chris came over this one evening, I was at the gate, a Security Guard at Reese Military Base: she pulled up across the street, parked her car, it was a no parking zone; but I was used to her doing things like that, so it was not out of the ordinary.

She came over to see me in my little corner hut, by the gate, where I waved in cars, checked out identifications, and checked out motor vehicles for violations, such as contraband and so forth. She was silent sort of, as if she was thinking. I was sitting inside the little hut, my joystick, on my lap, you know those sticks you are given as police officers to wound your assailants with, in case of need.

Anyhow, there she was, looking at me through the open window space,
"Dear, I don't think I have much time, but here is a sandwich, I want to talk to you, its ham and eggs, I know you like them."

"Can we talk later," I almost begged her, knowing she could be insist especially at times when told her 'no'.

"No." she had said, handing over the sandwich, "We can go in my car and sit and talk."

I thought about her 'no,' and if anything gets to me, is disrespect, and I said harshly, "Are you going to argue with me or leave, I got work to do!"

She started to cry, then I figured it must be serious, I had never seen her cry before (likened to my mother who I only saw once cry, and that was when I defied the judge, and told him to put me in jail for underage drinking, I wanted to be like my brother, and he did just that, but instead of jail, he put me into pre-trial, detention home for two weeks, and at the end of one, he visited me, and I told him, in so many words, I had enough of jail, and crime, and he smiled, and I was out in another week.) So, I felt, this must be serious, and accordingly I said, "Can't you explain it here, right here while I eat?"

"Sorry, but I can't" she said wiping her tears on her beautiful mink coat.

"It's all right," I said, "I'll wake up Jim; he'll take over for me for a while."

And I did just that, and we went to her car, in the wee hours of the morning, and she talked, and I listened. She had lost ,000-dollars, when the Mark went up, and the dollar went down (when I arrived in Germany, the Mark was 3.5 to a dollar, and now it had hit a low, the dollar that is.)

It was a frightfully chilly morning, and after Chris told me her troubles, she got into the backseat, and said,

"Ok, I want to make love."

I thought about it, it would be jamming two bodies into a Mustang, and that was hard to do. Jim motioned to me, there was a police car parked a block away, parked, waiting for American soldiers I suppose to be drunk racing down the street, coming back from a late night at one of the clubs.
In any case, I jammed an absolute tired body into her backseat, and we lay there in perfect harmony, until the action started, and it seemed like I was hitting barricades along side my hips, head, everyplace, worried half the time, those police officers would come and check us out, but Chris could care less.

She tried to get over me, and I her, and somehow we worked it out, and what were obstacles at one time, were now gone-or at least forgotten for the meantime, and at the end of the getting together, the gradually getting used to reality again fluttering on the peak of trying, with two aching bodies, we both fell back, and laughed, and I went back to work, and she, I thing, went back home.
